Tudela, Misamis Occidental โ On June 26, 2025, a Seaweeds Farming Technology Training was successfully conducted in Barangay Barra, Tudela, Misamis Occidental. The activity aimed to enhance the knowledge and technical capacity of local fisherfolk in seaweed nursery operations.
The training was part of the Seaweeds Nursery Project, an ongoing initiative spearheaded by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 10 (BFAR-10) through its Provincial Fisheries Office in Misamis Occidental, in close collaboration with the Local Government Unit of Tudela (LGU-Tudela). The activity underscores the agencyโs continued commitment to advancing sustainable alternative livelihoods and strengthening the resilience of coastal communities through inclusive aquaculture development, with special focus on equipping members of the Barra Fisherfolk Association with both advanced knowledge and practical skills in seaweed farming.
Topics covered include nursery management and operations, proper handling techniques and post-harvest processing. A key component of the training was a hands-on demonstration of the monoline methodโa simple and widely used seaweed farming technique that involves tying seaweed propagules to a single horizontal line (usually nylon or plastic) which is anchored underwater between two stakes underwater. This line serves as the base for seaweed growth, allowing the seaweed to develop properly while maintaining appropriate spacing for efficient and sustainable cultivation.
During the activity, Mr. Marcial Belano, one of the participating fisherfolk, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity:
โDako kaayo ni nga tabang para sa amoaโdili lang ni tungod sa pagkat-on, apan sa pagsabot usab sa kahinungdanon ug bili sa guso ug sa industriya niini. Panahon sa ban period sa pangisda o kung dili mi makalaot tungod sa kusog nga balod, ang pagpananom ug guso mahimong among pangunang tinubdan sa kita.โ
(This is a great help for usโnot only because of the knowledge we gain, but also because of the understanding of the importance and value of seaweed and its industry. During fishing ban period or when we canโt go fishing due to strong waves, growing seaweeds can be our main source of income.)
By promoting responsible aquaculture and sustainable livelihood options, BFAR-10 reinforces its commitment to empowering coastal communities through inclusive, community-driven initiatives. Through the provision of essential tools, knowledge and skills, the agency continues to establish a pathway toward environmental sustainability, economic stability and food security across the region.
