KALILANGAN, Bukidnon – To create a hallmark in diversifying commodities in freshwater aquaculture in the region, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 10 (BFAR-10) turned over a Satellite Hatchery for African catfish (hito) to the Kalilangan Fisherfolk Association (KFA) at the Ninoy Aquino site in this town.

Zaldy Saludarez, KFA president, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, which was a long-held aspiration for local fishers.

“This hatchery will not be just a source of fingerlings; it symbolizes hope for our community. I am dedicated to sharing the knowledge and technology we gain from this initiative with my fellow fisherfolk,” he said.

In recognizing the importance of the event, Municipal Councilor Loido Padsing and acting Municipal Agriculturist (MA) Roderick Basanez, attended the event.

Councilor Padsing thanked the BFAR-10 and its Provincial Fisheries Office in Bukidnon for making the project a reality.

The African Hito Satellite Hatchery is projected to produce approximately 40,000 pieces of hito fingerlings a month, significantly increasing the supply of this popular fish species in the province. This initiative aligns with the government’s efforts to promote sustainable aquaculture practices and empower local communities.

With the commitment and collaboration from all concerned, the goal of fisheries productivity is now within reach as the hatchery begins its operations. (##)
