PANAON, Misamis Occidental (Dec. 19) – After three months and 16 days of care and management, the Panaon Fisherfolk Association (PAFA) harvests 2.8 tons of cultured bangus (milkfish) in this town.

The culture began with 7,000 bangus fingerlings stocked in a 10m x 10m bamboo fish cage provided by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – Region 10 (BFAR-10) under the Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Program Phase II.

PAFA Chairman Rey Galario, expressed gratitude for the opportunity by stating that the livelihood provided has considerably increased the association’s income and enhanced its members’ eagerness in venturing into aquaculture.

Dako kaayo akong pasalamat sa BFAR ug sa SAAD program sa pagtuman sa among hangyo nga mag-culture ug bangus samtang nagapadayon ang among Payao nga proyekto. Ug padayon usab ko nga magdasig sa akong mga miyembro pinaagi sa pag tinabangay para sa kalambuan sa among asosasyon,” he said.
[I am very grateful to BFAR and the SAAD program for fulfilling our request to culture bangus while our Payao project continues. I will also continue to encourage my members to work together for the development of our association.]

With their harvest, PAFA has accumulated an estimated income of PhP343,000 which they plan to invest in danggit (rabbitfish) culture for their second cropping.

Further, the association looks forward to building on this success and expanding its capabilities with continued support from the BFAR-SAAD program and other stakeholders.
