OZAMIZ CITY, Misamis Occidental โ€” To strengthen seaweed production and promote sustainable livelihoods among coastal communities, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Region 10 (BFAR-10), through its Provincial Fisheries Office (PFO) in Misamis Occidental, distributed a total of โ‚ฑ544,000 worth of seaweed farming inputs to 50 seaweed growers from Barangays Carmen Annex, Sinuza, Pulot, and Malaubang in Ozamiz City.

The turnover ceremony, held on September 16, 2025, at the 3rd Floor Annex Building of Ozamiz City Hall, was conducted in collaboration with the Asenso Ozamiz Administration under the leadership of Mayor Sam Norman G. Fuentes.

Each beneficiary received 50 kg of seaweed propagules (Kappaphycus alvarezii); 4 sets of polyethylene (PE) ropes, each containing 4 rolls (Nos. 17, 14, 10, and 8 ร— 200 mm); 20 pcs. Styrofoam balls (volleyball size); 65 pcs. 4.5-inch-diameter HDPE floats; and 2 rolls of 1,000 m super twine (100% virgin material) to support their seaweed farming operations.

According to BFAR-10 Provincial Fishery Officer Virginia P. Valde, the initiative forms part of the agencyโ€™s ongoing Seaweed Development Program (SDP), which includes the provision of farm implements, establishment of 20-meter High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) seaweed nurseries, and operation of the Seaweed Culture Laboratory (SCL) to ensure a sustainable supply of quality seaweeds seedlings across Northern Mindanao.

โ€œThrough these interventions, we aim not only to increase seaweed production and improve the income of our fisherfolk in the province but also to help revitalize the coastal resources within the Panguil Bay area. By promoting sustainable seaweed farming, we are contributing to the ecological restoration of the bay while ensuring long-term livelihood opportunities for our coastal communities,โ€ Valde said.

Meanwhile, City Administrator Rutheza Grace Ouano, who delivered the message of Mayor Fuentes, said that the distribution is not merely a turnover of inputs but a reflection of the cityโ€™s continuing support to its fisherfolk.

โ€œThe seaweed inputs you received will serve as foundation to boost your production, increase your income, and create more opportunities for your families and communities. This is part of our Asenso brand of service โ€” real action, clear results, and people-centered governance,โ€ she reiterated.

In support of this, Vice Mayor Simplicia โ€œBebieโ€ O. Neri also reminded the beneficiaries to take responsibility in protecting the sea and maintaining its cleanliness for future generations.

Ultimately, through this initiative, BFAR-10 and the City Government of Ozamiz reaffirmed their shared commitment to empower seaweed farmers, promote sustainable seaweed farming, and ensure that the provinceโ€™s rich marine resources continue to provide life and livelihood for generations to come.
